Ten interconnected short stories spanning 150 years of California history, with original artwork by renowned California painter Diana Bittleston.

C.B. Calsing's breakout collection of short fiction takes you on a fascinating journey through time along the coastline of San Luis Obispo California in a way no one has ever done before. C.B. Calsing's historical romp through the San Luis Obispo area of California is a delightful journey through time, as could only be told through a native daughter with a fascination with not only the history but also the interplay of human lives and how they weave together to create this amazing tapestry we know as life.

  1. Good morning C.B. and super congrats on the new release!!! What an interesting idea for a short story collection. Do the stories have other connections besides place?

Tell us a bit more about this collection and what you're working on now.

Best of luck with your first book and hope it's just the first of many, many more!

  2. My stories do have other connections. Characters reappear, or their children and granchildren pop up, and through them we know how the previous generation's characters faired.

Right now I'm working on a magical realism novel set in the bayous of Louisiana during 1925. A lot went on back then. Prohibition and the Trapper's War both play a part in this story, which is about a woman living on the fringes of society who helps an English botanist discover a rare plant.

I should be able to pop in a few times today, so if anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

  6. You're right AuthorIsland, the books do sound like they'd make great movies. Have you tried getting it to studio people yet CB? You should.

I've never heard the term magical realism before. What exactly is that?

  7. I actually am working on a spec script for a producer right now. It's his story, but maybe once I get my foot in the door, he'll look at something of mine.

@Katie, magical realism is a style of writing where amazing things happen, and the details are all very lush, but it still happens in our world. The best example that comes to mind is Gabriel Garcia Marquez. One of my favorite books is "Love in the Time of Cholera," which he wrote; it's full of magical realism. He's a major influence on my writing.

  10. My mother is actually the artist that did all the work-- the cover and the interior illustrations. You can check out her work at www.dianabittleston.com. She used to make books with me when I was little, so when my publisher asked if I had an artist in mind, she was the first person I thought of. She'd already read all the stories, so it was an easy collaboration.

  12. Hello and congratulation on your first release. That is so great and I can't tell you how much I love discovering new authors here!

How long have you been writing? that's exciting that you are working on a script too. How much different is that from writing a book?

Good luck and may you have a wonderful career!
